1. Buffalo WZR-RS-G54

The device is supported by OpenWRT WhiteRussian-RC4 and later (earlier untested).

The boot_wait NVRAM variable is on by default. Resetting to factory defaults via mtd erase nvram is NOT safe on this unit (applies to Whiterussian RC5 and earlier).

1.1. TFTP installation notes

When installing, make sure you use either openwrt-brcm-2.4-jffs2-4MB.trx (although the device has 8MB FLASH) or openwrt-brcm-2.4-squashfs.trx. Forget about *bin firmwares, device won't accept them.

/!\ Note, the Buffalo WZR-RS-G54 doesn't revert to the 192.168.1.1 address when starting the bootloader, but uses the LAN IP address set in NVRAM. Try this address if you have difficulties.

/!\ Note, TFTP server is only running during the bootstrapping sequence. Reboot or powercycle the router just before you do the put.

Send image with TFTP:

tftp 192.168.12.1
tftp> binary
tftp> trace
tftp> rexmt 1
tftp> put openwrt-xxx-x.x-xxx.trx

LEDs don't work the usual way (Power doesn't blink during flashing). Once restarted, Diag LED will turn on and blink occasionaly, however during boot-up or normal operation of OpenWRT firmware it's always ON. Don't worry about this fact, everything is under control.

1.2. Reverting to original firmware

Download firmware from www.buffalotech.com, unpack the zip. Firmware has some magic header, which has to be stripped off to get TRX image. For the firmware version 2.43 I used this command to strip 37 bytes of rubbish at the beginning of the file:

# dd if=WZR-RS-G54_2.43_1.03-US_US-uclibc of=firmware.trx bs=37 skip=1

Anyway, check that HDR string is directly at the very beginning of the image file. If it's not, firmware image will be rejected.

Once converted to TRX format, the image can be flashed any way - TFTP, by mtd or via web interface.

1.3. Troubleshooting

1.3.1. I erased NVRAM and now I can't access the device

OK, you've done exactly what you were warned not to do... Anyway, there's possibility to revive the thing. All you have to do is to connect to the device via Wifi - IP is 192.168.11.1, SSID is OpenWrt - and login via telnet or SSH. Once in, run these commands:

nvram set wl0_ifname=eth2
nvram set lan_ifname=br0
nvram set lan_ifnames="eth0 eth2"
nvram set wan_device=eth1
nvram set wan_ifname=eth1

This will create bridge from LAN an Wifi, WAN will stay separate. Bridge IP is 192.168.11.1 by default, WAN IP is retrieved by DHCP. Current Whiterussian (RC5) doesn't set these values correctly by itself, you have to help it a bit.

2. Original page contents

Retrieve the firmware and decompress it

# mkdir /tmp/buffalo; cd /tmp/buffalo
# wget -q http://www.buffalotech.com/downloads/WZR-RS-G54_2%5B1%5D.32_1.00.zip
# unzip -q WZR-RS-G54_2\[1\].32_1.00.zip

Determine the correct bs value

# hexdump -C WZR-RS-G54_2\[1\].32_1.00-US_US-TZO-uclibc.00-US_US-uclibc | grep Compressed

    000c0030 00 00 00 00 00 43 6f 6d 70 72 65 73 73 65 64 20 |.....Compressed |
    000c0050 69 0e f9 84 1a 43 6f 6d 70 72 65 73 73 65 64 00 |i....Compressed.|

offset = 000c0035 (786485)
         786485 - 16 bytes = 786469
bs     = 786469

Take the calculated bs value and extract the filesystem

# dd if=WZR-RS-G54_2\[1\].32_1.00-US_US-TZO-uclibc.00-US_US-uclibc of=wzr-rs-g54-fs.img skip=1 bs=786469
  5+1 records in
  5+1 records out

Mount the extracted filesystem

# mkdir /mnt/wzr-rs-g54
# mount -t cramfs -o loop wzr-rs-g54-fs.img /mnt/wzr-rs-g54

A few quick lists + sizes

# cd /mnt/wzr-rs-g54/; ls -lh
