jffs2_scan_eraseblock(): Magic bitmask 0x1985 not found at 0x0000XXXX: 0xXXXX instead
  • Wireless performance is sometimes questionable (see this forum post for possible reason).
  • Some people reported about wireless instabilities after several days, these can be avoided with a daily cron job that restarts wireless via "wifi up" (see this forum post).
  • Alternative for wireless client bridge support (see ticket #7918)
  • (solved in Backfire 10.03.1) All WRT350N v2 share the same MAC address 00:00:00:00:51:81 as Linksys did not set the U-Boot variable "ethaddr" for each device.
    Instead Linksys reads it via firmware from the U-Boot mtd partition at offset 0x0003FFA0.
    Changing the LAN MAC address in Backfire 10.03 will make the router inaccessible.
    Two tickets were created for a solution: #7111 (committed in r21577 & r21581), #7113 (committed in r21647 & r21648).

eRcOmM Hell and MTD specialities

UBoot of the WRT350N v2 is modified to include the later described download mode, but also to check for some marks inside the flash. The string "eRcOmM" has to be at offset 0x0075ffe8 of the image otherwise UBoot will stop booting, therefore the area 0x00750000 - 0x0075ffff is excluded from the rootfs mtd parititon to prevent it from being overwritten (related forum post, see also Linksys's upgrade.h and OpenWrt's WRT350Nv2 webupgrade builder).

Revert to Stock Firmware

An extracted Linksys update image is needed and can be flashed like any OpenWrt update. How to extract a Linksys update image is described in this forum thread.


Flashing and Recovery Methods

No matter how OpenWrt/Linux is flashed, at the first boot always wait until the JFFS2 file system is fully formatted.
Serial console and `dmesg` output:

jffs2_scan_eraseblock(): End of filesystem marker found at 0x0
jffs2_build_filesystem(): unlocking the mtd device... done.
jffs2_build_filesystem(): erasing all blocks after the end marker... done.
mini_fo: using base directory: /
mini_fo: using storage directory: /overlay

For the stock firmware an erase error is displayed as the flash image size (0x00800000) is bigger than the "image" mtd partition (0x00750000), but this is not an issue.

Download Mode

This is a special functionality added by LinkSys to U-Boot.
No extra hardware required.

Currently explained in three forum posts here, here and here.
Here are the cliff notes if you find the above posts either not verbose enough or a bit too verbose:

  1. Download openwrt-recovery (as of writing, 2010-05-31). A self compiled openwrt-wrt350nv2-squashfs-recovery.bin is possible, too.
  2. Prepare your PC/laptop as described in the below paragraphs (depending on your OS).
  3. Connect an UTP cable from any of the 4 LAN ports of the WRT350N v2 directly to your PC/laptop.
  4. Enter download mode on WRT350N v2 by disconnecting its power, then pressing the reset button (keep pressing), powering on the WRT350N, and releasing the reset button after 1-2 secs (no longer than 3secs, or exactly as soon as the LAN led switches on). The power led will now alternate between colours if done correctly.
  5. If flashing, fails … never mind, try again!

Windows XP 32-bit

  1. Download, unpack & install Upgrade_207_XP.zip (this only seemed to work on XP 32-bit for me, W7 32/64 did not seem to work, YMMV).
  2. Start the 'Upgrade Utility' installed in step 1, click "Browse targets", click "Files" and browse to the image downloaded in above's step 1. Press OK for all dialogs. Now click "Upgrade" and ignore any possible message about an older version.
  3. Wait for the flash to complete (it will tell you) and, if applicable, power cycle your WRT350N. Done.

Linux Upslug2

The OpenWrt build system also provides UpSlug2 with support for WRT350N v2.
Upslug2 normally searches for the MAC address of an NSLU2. So the correct MAC address of the WRT350N v2 has to be provided to it. It is written on the label at the bottom of the router and also listed in the U-Boot output ("mac address in flash is:…"). For detailed information, see also post #953.

Correct Upslug2 call:

[sudo] ./upslug2 [-d <interface>] -t <MAC address> --image=openwrt-wrt350nv2-squashfs-recovery.bin

Important note: Only option "–image" will work with wrt350nv2. The use of "–kernel", "–rootfs" or other options of upslug2 (Version 20071227) will fail!

TFTP in U-Boot via Serial Access

Serial access to the router is required (see "Serial Port" above).
Also a TFTP server has to be setup on another device on the same network. The TFTP server will provide the image to flash.

First stop the autoboot in U-Boot by pressing enter on the serial console.

Check the current U-Boot settings with `printenv`.
Especially look at "ipaddr" and "serverip" as these have to match the network and the server ip address.
If necessary change the ip address of the router and/or the TFTP server accordingly.
New settings are only temporary until the next boot, as long as the new settings are not saved with `saveenv`.

Load the image from the TFTP server with `tftpboot`.
After a successful transfer the size of the file is printed. This has to match the size on the TFTP server and is needed in the next steps for flashing.
If the transfer failed, then check the network cabling and the settings of the router and TFTP server. Do not continue until this works correctly.

At last erase and unprotect the flash for writing, then copy the loaded image from RAM to flash. For copying the load address, the flash address and the image size are need. All in hex with "0x" prefix. The image size must be taken from the previous step ("Bytes transferred").
This is the most critical part as by erasing this part of the flash the router will loose its OS. But do not worry as U-Boot will still be there for flashing.
If all went well reboot the device via `reset`.

Serial Port (JP5)

The pin layout is described in this forum post.

JTAG (J4)

JTAG header J4 JTAG is available. The JTAG header with its pins is missing and has to be soldered onto the device. JTAG is named J4 and is located near the silver heat sink next to the network ports, see picture to the right. Pin 1 is in the lower right corner and marked with thicker lines.

It's a 20-pin ARM JTAG connector. "The connector is a 20-Way Insulation Displacement Connector (IDC) keyed box header (2.54mm male)" (taken from ARM document DUI0048, chapter F.1, page F-2 (pdf page 246)). But pins 5 and 7 are switched, that's TDI and TMS.

After resetting and halting the device, the chipset registers have to be initialized, so that RAM, flash and other features are working. Lennert, buytenh and DirkNL found out a setup that allows you to boot from RAM, but still it is not perfect.
