mqmaker WiTi Board

The mqmaker WiTi Board was funded from a IndieGoGo campaign to produce a low-cost open and extensible router and NAS platform. It met its funding goal and as of January 2016 mqmaker is shipping production versions.

The WiTi Board ships with a heavily-modified version of OpenWrt 14.07 based on the Mediatek SDK which contains code not suitable for upstreaming. Developers have created forks of this codebase but also forks based on upstream.
Refer to the Resources section below for more information.

As with any bare boards be sure to place it on a non-conductive surface or use the acrylic case that comes with it.
Do note that some are shipped without a case.

Flashing

Precaution

You're highly recommended to have serial access available as there's no way to flash this board if the firmware is unbootable.

Debricking

It might be worthwhile to test this procedure:

Take any fat32 formatted usb flash drive, put firmware to the root folder and rename it to root_uImage, insert it to the (already powered) router usb port, press and hold both buttons (wps and reset) for about 10-15 seconds, release reset and keep wps pressed for another 10-15 seconds. After a 2-3 minutes you should get a clean install.

This seems to work for any witi firmware

Vendor provided firmware

You can either use the web interface or sysupgrade at the prompt, you're advised not to keep settings when upgrading to upstream version of OpenWrt.

TFTP

This requires serial access (see below for details) and a physical connection to one of the Ethernet LAN ports.
Your TFTP server needs to be at 10.10.10.3 (Netmask: 255.255.255.0, GW: 10.10.10.1) and the firmware (…-sysupgrade.bin) needs to be named test.bin.

This will allow you to test your firmware before permanently flashing it (not all features may work in this mode but it should at least boot).

  • Reset your router and at the boot menu select option 4.

If you want to permanently flash select option 2 at the boot menu.

General information during normal operation

RTC (optional)

This board supports installation of a LIR1220 that powers the Real-Time Clock (RTC). If the battery is not present, the router will lose its time setting each time the WiTi loses power. This is normally not an issue as the firmware can use a NTP server to query and restore time during bootup however.

Heatsinks

By default the WiTi board is shipped without any heatsinks and some chips get hot during operation. On commercial routers the both radio chips and the CPU have heatsinks and you're advice to do the same if you plan to have it powered on for a longer period of time. The radio controllers seem to throttle (limit power output) when getting hot resulting in shorter range. Any small heatsink(s) will do, bundles for the RPi have been reported to fit fine which can be easily found on eBay.

Known issues

  • In order to use the vendors MAC adresses of the physical Ethernet NICs and WLAN NICs, OpenWrt typically reads them from a dedicated position in EEPROM calibration data or MTD partition. The WiTi Board v1 does not provide valid MAC adresses in its EEPROM calibration part. As a temporary workaround for this serious issue, nbd was so kind to write a helper script (/sbin/fixup-mac-address) with commit r48027. The scripts needs to be executed just once after flashing and it generates random MAC adresses and stores them in the EEPROM.
  • WAN 2 port isn't supported in upstream.
    The 2nd WAN (IC Plus IP1001 GigaPHY) is only supported by stock firmware and other Mediatek SDK based firmwares.
    As a sidenote about this issue, this interface is actually connected to the switch as only the MT7621N SoC supports 2 RGMII interfaces.
